Home Addition DIY Project - Interior Part 4 - Drywall Finishing

Drywall Taping

For this project it was decide to use mesh tape instead of the paper tape, because it reduces the steps required to set the tape in the joint compound. The tape is stuck on all the joints, corners, and along the ceiling. A putty knife works great for cutting the tape off, if you hold the mesh tape on the wall and pull the roll. You want the tape centered of the joint.

Drywall Joint Compound

Premixed joint compound, or "mud" was used on the seams over the tape. The compound is smeared on the seams and then the sharp edge of the putty knife is used to pull the extra material off the drywall. The walls and ceiling require 2 to 3 coats to be filled properly. However, the ceiling to wall joint will not get as many coats, because it will be covered with a crown molding later. This is the most time consuming part of the job, and some people opt to get a professional to do it, which I fully understand. You just have to take time and have patience with the steps. Next week we will be finish sanding and prepping for paint.
